02 Nov Five lessons from Founding Partner James Barrett
33 years in professional services. 11 years as Founding Partner. Countless moments of impact.
James Barrett has officially stepped into retirement, but his influence remains deeply felt across BellchambersBarrett. Since founding the firm with Shane Bellchambers in 2014, James has helped shape a workplace built on trust, respect and genuine care.
To celebrate his legacy, we asked James to share five lessons that have guided him through his career.
Lesson 1: Trust brings out the best in people
For James, creating a professional environment built on trust and respect is non-negotiable. Because that’s the foundation of growth.
‘When people feel supported and heard, they perform at their best,’ he explains.
It’s a lesson that shaped the culture of BellchambersBarrett from the very beginning, and continues to influence how our teams collaborate, communicate and lead today.
Lesson 2: Put your hand up for the hard stuff
Progress doesn’t come from doing the easy things. It comes from taking on the work others might avoid. So James encourages us to step forward for the tough jobs – every time.
‘Take on the more difficult assignments,’ James says. ‘Those will help fast-track your progress. And you’ll build confidence, skills and resilience in the process.’
Lesson 3: Say yes to something new
Not all growth comes from climbing higher. Some of it comes from going sideways – into something completely new. That’s why it’s important to explore fresh experiences, including those outside of work.
As James puts it: ‘Trying something new can improve your creativity, provide inspiration – and add value to your professional career.’
So if you’re thinking of exploring a volunteering role, stepping into a leadership opportunity, or even picking up a new skill… this is your sign to go for it.
Lesson 4: Make time for fun
Professional services can be intense, especially during peak periods. That’s why James reminds us that it’s important to prioritise work-life balance.
‘Family holidays, long weekends, finding time to unwind – these are the things that keep you grounded,’ he says.
‘They help you rest after each busy season, and recharge for the next.’
Lesson 5: People are different – and that’s the point.
At BellchambersBarrett, diversity has been our focus and strength since day one.
‘Everyone has different interests and motivators – and it’s important to understand and foster them,’ James says.
‘Our people come from a range of cultural backgrounds, and this diversity is what makes BellchambersBarrett a better place to work.’
A final reflection – and what’s ahead for James
Looking back, James says his time at BellchambersBarrett was hands-down one of his biggest career highlights, adding that the years went by quickly.
So, what would he change if he could do things differently?
‘I really enjoyed my role as the firm’s founding partner,’ he reflects. ‘If anything, I would have started the firm earlier. And I would’ve taken more time to celebrate our successes more often.’
While he will miss the people and the energy, James is confident that the firm will continue to thrive due to the ‘excellent leaders, quality people and a clear vision for growth.’
When asked what he’s most looking forward to in retirement, James smiles.
‘Plenty of variety. Family time, fishing, camping, travelling, volunteering… and finally, improving my cooking.’
